Black Hanging Bars for Lexi Mainland’s NYC Home Renovation

Posted by Patrick Glynn on

Project Overview

I recently worked with Lexi Mainland, a creative force and editor with a sharp eye for interiors. You may know her from The New York Times, WSJ, or House Beautiful. She’s was renovating her home in NYC and reached out looking for smart, functional ways to bring her laundry/workspace combo to life — and keep it looking beautiful.

This project ended up being a two-bar custom install. We designed:

  • A ceiling-mounted bar above the washer/dryer and sink for daily laundry use
  • An extra-long ceiling and wall-mounted hanging bar across the opposite side of the room to double as extra hanging space above her work and storage surfaces

The Challenge

Lexi’s space is part laundry room, part home office — and every inch counts. The goal was to add hanging storage that felt intentional, subtle, and stable — no bulky hardware, no visual clutter.

With NYC ceilings being what they are, we needed to be really thoughtful about how we mounted these bars. Each one had to be solid enough for real-world use, but clean enough to blend into her stunning cabinetry and palette.

The Approach

For the first install — the bar above the washer and sink — we went with a ceiling-mounted design, powder-coated black with clean pipe joints. We mounted directly into the ceiling joists. It sits just above the folding station and offers a perfect perch for hangers, baskets, and day-to-day laundry needs.

The second bar, across from the washer wall, was a longer piece, designed to run the full length of her built-in desk area. We custom-fit this one with wall and ceiling mounts to provide extra support. This gave Lexi even more hanging storage while keeping the desk area feeling open and modern.

Design Details

  • Bar 1 (Washer Wall): Ceiling-mounted black steel pipe
  • Bar 2 (Desk Wall): Extra-long run with both ceiling and side-wall mounting
  • Material & Finish: Powder-coated matte black steel
  • Custom Fit: Tailored to room layout, cabinetry width, and joist locations

Working with Lexi

Lexi was a dream client — responsive, thoughtful, and incredibly design-savvy. She measured everything with precision and even made sure there was space accounted for fittings, which saved us a lot of back and forth.

What stood out most was her taste: soft green cabinets, open shelving, and calm textures made this one of the most beautiful laundry rooms I’ve seen. And now, it functions even better.

What Made It Special

It wasn’t just one install — it was a two-bar system that worked together to make the whole room flow. From drying clothes to styling jackets or holding cleaning gear, both bars feel like they were always meant to be part of the space.

And that’s the win. Custom work that disappears into the design but still does its job.
